More Than a Photographer — A Storyteller

I've spent over thirty years in the arts — writing, composing, performing — and sixteen of those years pointing a camera at love. I'm a hopeless romantic who happens to know his way around a lens. When I show up to your wedding, I'm not just there to take pictures. I'm there because I genuinely believe your story deserves to be told with the same care you put into living it.

My name is Jamaal McKenzie, and Visuals by J. McKenzie is the culmination of everything I love — art, music, poetry, and people. I photograph and film weddings, engagements, and portraits out of Washington D.C., and I travel wherever love takes me.

How I Work

Before I ever pick up my camera, I want to know you. Not just your timeline or your venue — I want to know what song makes you cry, what inside joke makes you both lose it, what moment you're most looking forward to. That's how I make images that actually feel like you. I'll help with posing, sure, but my real job is making you forget I'm even there so the real stuff comes through.

From our first conversation all the way through gallery delivery, I'm hands-on. I'll coordinate with your planner, work with your venue, and make sure your day flows without a hitch. You've got enough on your plate — the photography side of things should be the easiest part.

The Look & The Feel

My style sits somewhere between editorial and documentary — clean, intentional, and rooted in real emotion. I'm drawn to dramatic light, quiet in-between moments, and the kind of compositions that feel like they belong in a magazine but never lose their warmth. Every gallery is edited with a timeless palette that ages like fine wine, not a trend.

I also create cinematic wedding films — because some moments need motion, music, and sound to do them justice. Whether it's a three-minute highlight or a full-length feature, I approach film the same way I approach a photograph: with intention, artistry, and heart.

Home base is the DMV — Washington D.C., Northern Virginia, and Maryland. I've shot at venues across Georgetown, Capitol Hill, Old Town Alexandria, the vineyards of Loudoun County, the Eastern Shore, Annapolis, Baltimore, Richmond, and the Shenandoah Valley. But I don't stay put. Destination weddings are some of my favorite work — new light, new landscapes, same level of intention.
